How to Fix Poor Bed Adhesion in 3D Printing
The print fails to stick to the bed at all, or a corner/section detaches and drags loose partway through the print.
Common causes
Bed not level, or nozzle too far from the bed
Without a consistent, close first layer across the whole bed, adhesion will be inconsistent or absent.
Dirty bed surface
Oils from handling the bed, or accumulated dust, both meaningfully reduce how well plastic grips the surface.
Bed temperature too low for the material
Each material has a bed temp range it needs for the first layer to bond properly.
First layer printed too fast
A rushed first layer doesn't get enough contact time to bond well.
How to fix it
Level the bed and set the Z-offset
Use a paper test or your printer's automatic mesh leveling, and make sure the nozzle is consistently close across the whole surface.
Clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol
Do this right before printing — even a light coat of skin oil noticeably hurts adhesion.
Match bed temperature to material
Check your filament's recommended range and don't just default to whatever the slicer profile assumed.
Slow down the first layer
A significantly slower first-layer speed gives the plastic more time to bond to the bed.
Add a brim or the right surface for your material
A PEI sheet, glass with adhesive, or a simple glue stick layer can all help depending on what you're printing.
