How to Fix Layer Separation (Delamination) in 3D Prints
Individual layers separating or cracking apart from each other, often noticeable after the print cools or when it's put under any physical stress.
Common causes
Nozzle temperature too low
Layers need enough heat to properly fuse to the layer below — too cool and they just sit on top of each other.
Cooling fan too aggressive
Cooling each layer too quickly means the next layer can't bond to it as well.
Print speed too fast
Faster printing means less time for each new layer to fuse with the one underneath.
Drafts or temperature swings
Inconsistent ambient temperature during the print affects how well layers fuse throughout.
How to fix it
Increase nozzle temperature slightly
A few degrees higher often meaningfully improves inter-layer bonding without other side effects.
Reduce cooling fan speed
Materials like ABS, ASA, and PETG generally need less aggressive cooling than PLA to bond layers well.
Slow down the print
Especially for tall, thin, or structural parts where layer strength actually matters.
Enclose the printer
Reduces drafts and keeps the ambient temperature around the print more stable and consistent.
