Carbon Fiber Filament Print Settings and Common Problems

"Carbon fiber filament" isn't a base material on its own — it's usually PLA, PETG, or nylon infused with chopped carbon fiber for extra stiffness. Print settings mostly follow whatever the base material is, but the fiber itself introduces one problem none of the base materials have.

Always use a hardened steel or ruby-tipped nozzle — never brass. Chopped carbon fiber is abrasive enough to visibly wear out a brass nozzle within a few hours of printing, changing the effective nozzle diameter as it wears.

Common problems

  • Nozzle wear causing gradual under-extrusion

    A brass nozzle exposed to carbon fiber wears unevenly, widening the opening in a way that throws off flow calibration over time — prints that looked fine a week ago start under-extruding with no settings changes. If you're seeing this, check the nozzle material and condition first.

  • Inconsistent extrusion from a worn nozzle

    Once a brass nozzle has visibly worn from carbon fiber, its opening is no longer a clean circle, which can cause irregular extrusion width and occasional clogs. Replacing it with hardened steel resolves this permanently rather than needing repeated recalibration.

  • Base material's own quirks still apply

    A carbon-fiber-filled PETG still oozes and strings like PETG; a carbon-fiber nylon is still just as moisture-sensitive as plain nylon. Check the guide for whichever material the carbon fiber is blended into.
